Simulacra Landscape
2025

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Americans spend approximately 90% of their lives indoors and over 45% of their waking hours in front of one or more screen-based devices.

Through cacophonous sound and imagery, "Simulacra Landscape" highlights the perverseness of seeking out the healing qualities of nature through screen-based experiences. Various monitors align to form a dystopian horizon line. Videos in the installation play directly from YouTube channels with names like "Healing Nature & Meditation" and "Healing Nature Society—content which is all part of a fairly recent internet phenomenon; that is: the proliferation of “relaxing” nature videos, with some having over 45 million views. Many of the found videos feature actual footage while others were, even more perversely, produced using AI technology. "Simulacra Landscape" interrogates the role of emergent technologies and begs the question of who/what is (or is not...) being healed when we say "healing nature."
